Dog-friendly museums in Budapest

It’s always a good idea to let dogs into different cultural facilities, and now Budapest has a couple of examples. We found 3 dog-friendly museums, where all the family is welcome.

The existence of dog-friendly museums is not new for you, who are reading this from some Western European countries or even from the USA, but here in Hungary this initiative is still in its infancy. The first two museums became dog friendly last year: both of them are the member institutions of Óbudai Museum: the Local History Collection of Óbuda and the Goldberger Textile Collection. The third one, which is opened to dogs from this year, is also in the 3rd district of the city: the Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism.

Dogs can snooping around here...

The Óbuda Museum revealed: the idea came in 2014, when they had to refuse a group of mentally disabled people. The group was accompanied by a therapy dog, and both the visitors and the staff faced the fact that the dog cannot come in. This made the leaders of the institution think: why would they cut off the exhibition from some people. That was the point when they decided to start the process of becoming a dog-friendly museum. There was no need to any larger conversion, only the owners are expected (and required) to be more responsible than usual.

Since this first moment, all temporary and permanent exhibitions of the Local History Collection of Óbuda and the Goldberger Textile Collection became available for dogs. As the most important aspect is to protect the art objects, the puppies have to be potty trained and leash is a must. There are rugs for them to clear the paws and bowls filled with fresh water. If there is more than one four-legged friend at the museum, the organizers can ask the owners to keep a little distance from each other. And of course the works of art have been placed into dog-proof environment, because you never know.

... and they can set paws in the Museum of Trade and Tourism as well.

The Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism joined this year to these two institutions: they also opened all exhibitions to dogs. As they said: the first experiences are totally positive. They have only met calmly walking, gentle dogs in their halls.

Although none of these three places exhibits rare paintings worth billion Euros, but these objects are much more easily accessible to the dogs. There are no pictures hanging high on the wall, but interactive opportunities (or toys, from the dog's perspective), such as hanging textiles in palpable proximity in the textile collection. The confidence in dogs and their owners is really fascinating. As all museums are in the same part of the city, we have to say: the third district leads in the doggy competition, but we hope that other museums and districts will join them soon.
