Four Hungarian restaurants among the world’s bests

La Liste 2019 is here and there are several reasons to be proud of.

La Liste is one of the most acknowledged gastronomic rankings: it’s a list of the 1,000 best restaurants in the world. It is sanctioned by France’s Foreign Ministry and tourism board and was launched in Paris in December 2015. La Liste is cited as the French Foreign Ministry's response to the British published gastronomic guide The World's 50 Best Restaurants. The list factors in more than 400 international dining guides, crowd-sourced sites (such as Yelp and TripAdvisor) or press reviews (New York Times, Washington Post...). It also takes into consideration Zagat, Michelin, the James Beard Award, Gault & Millau, OpenTable. So, to be on their list is quite a big thing.

This year four Hungarian restaurants made it to La Liste: three from Budapest and one from the countryside. On the 2019 list, the best Hungarian restaurant is the two Michelin-star Onyx, reaching a total of 83 points. Costes had 80.50 points, Borkonyha 80, just as „Anyukám mondta” from Encs. For comparison, there are 20 Austrian, 9 Slovenian and 6 Croatian restaurants on the list, but there is no restaurant from Slovakia or Romania on La Liste, and even the Czech Republic has only one place.

There was no major movement at the top of the list compared to previous years: Guy Savoy (99.75 points) leads the list for the third year. The three Michelin-star Paris restaurants are followed by Le Bernardin in New York (also 99.75 points), and the Paris Alain Ducasse au Plaza Athénée (99.50 points) in Paris came third. Fourth is Martín Berasategui from Spain (99.50 points), fifth is the Japanese Matsukawa (also 99.50 points).
