A nice place to chill out – Kőleves kert
Posted by Mia Balogh · Aug 14, 2014

If you are looking for a place with unique atmosphere to chill out in Budapest, or you are just looking for a cool bar or restaurant, where you can spend some time with friends, well-prepared food and drinks, then try Kőleves kert. I did, and liked it pretty much.

My best friend’s birthday was the right occasion for me to try Kőleves kert. He told me recently, that he likes the place, so it was obvious, that we will go there together soon. I was sure, that it is a place to hang out with friends, to enjoy nice food and drinks, or just to chill out, if we would like to. And I was right. But first, let me tell you some interesting details about the place.

“Kőleves kert” can be found easily in Kazinczy Street, in the seventh district of the Hungarian capital. Its name means Stone Soup Garden. Stone Soup makes me think of the tale, where a soldier makes a nice dish for a stingy old lady, asking her first for water and a stone only, later for other ingredients, including potatoes and sausage, too. Well, here I had the impression, that the staff can make the same wonders: very nice dishes, adding the right ingredients, one by one.

I tasted chicken taco, which was ready in a few minutes. I had to add some salt, but it was quite delicious, flavoured with some spices I can’t tell exactly. It was served with some green salads and purple cabbage, but for me, the taste of the meet was the most essential thing. It was perfect. I wish I could do the same at home.

About the drinks, well, I should go back to look at the drink menu again, because I saw someone drinking ginger lemonade so I decided to ask for the same, without actually looking at other options or at the prices. But I have to say, Kőleves kert is not more expensive than any other bar or ruin pub in the city.

The word “garden” in the name of the place is as friendly, as Kőleves kert but for me, it is much more a nice courtyard to hang out at with friends, or to sit at the funny hammocks and colourful chairs, which make the retro feeling perfect here. If you hire a bike, you can come here with your vehicle, because they have a safe place to lock it down.

Did you know?

Every Friday evening, there is a film club at Kőleves kert. Some friendly folks told us there, that we could join them for a Turkish film about feminism and equality, but the timing was not right. Maybe next time.
