Greedy Thursday
Posted by Mia Balogh · Jan 22, 2015

The possibility of trying the menu in a nice restaurant on a 50 percent discount is a really inviting possibility for tourists and for Hungarian people, as well. You can do it on Greedy Thursday, 19 February in several restaurants of the country.

Greedy Thursday was organized for the first time in 2006 by Hungarian Tourism Ltd. Since then, more and more restaurants have joined this initiative, which makes possible for guests to get 50 percent discount from the prices of the restaurant chosen by them on a day given. In 2015, this day will be the 19th February.

The initiative is popular among tourists who visit Hungary, but also among locals, too, because they enjoy returning to their favourite restaurants, or tasting the menu of a brand new or maybe more elegant, more expensive place for half price. So the best restaurants become even more frequented places on Greedy Thursday, and it is worth reserving table for ourselves, if we don’t want to risk missing the half price menu of the restaurant chosen by us or by our loved ones.

The success of this initiative is shown by the increase of the numbers, as well. In 2006, there were ten thousands of greedy guests and 500 restaurants participating in Greedy Thursday, and the number of the restaurants was doubled for 2008.

In 2009, there were almost 1300 restaurants offering half priced menus for 260 thousand people. In 2010, the number of restaurants rose above 1300, but the number of guests was 30 thousand less than in the previous year.

In 2011, people had the possibility to score restaurants they’ve visited on Greedy Thursday. 5 was the best note and 1 was the least favourable. Hundreds of greedy visitors dispersed their points and at the end, the average was 4.26 so we can say that guests had a really pleasant stay almost everywhere. In 2012, the average of the greedy guest scores became 4.47, and in 2013, it was a little bit higher, 4.48.

Did you know?

Hungarian Railways (MÁV) joins Greedy Thursday, too. On their special dinner train, Candlelight Express you can enjoy 50 percent off the prices of the food and drinks available, only on 19 February. After having your seat(s) reserved, you can’t miss the train, because it won’t leave platform 9 in Nyugati Railway Station.
