Római part - outdoor terraces along the Danube, Part 1
Posted by Ágnes Taraszovics · Apr 24, 2014

Danube is a defining element of Budapest’s life and image, intertwined with the city in many different ways. In our new series we take a look at the coastal nightclubs, pubs and restaurants of the Hungarian capital. First of all one of the oldest: the Római part (the Roman coast).

The story began in the 1800s, when the first restaurants, beaches and boathouses appeared in this area, and thesparkling summermoodhasincreased ever since. There is a central, less than a kilometer long coast that has more bars and restaurants than the downtown has in an equal area. Although great variety of restaurants can be found here, the prevailing style is the real retro vibe, which hasn’t changed since the mid-90s, with self-service taverns. And here comes 4 of my favorites.

Fellini Római kutúrbisztró

The unique attractiveness of this “culture bistro” are the beach loungers lining up directly on the shore. This is a real summer evening chill place, where people can enjoy the pebbles barefoot. For me this place is about summer evening conversations, belgian beers and concerts, because there’s also a small stage set up on the shore with live musicin the evening.

Nyárfás kávéház (PoplarTreeCafé)

This one is also a perennial favorite, which takes its name from the tree standing in middle of the terrace: it has not been cut down due to the construction, rather they built the terrace around it. The restaurant offers similar plates to the others in the neighborhood (fish soup, whiting, spaghetti, gyros, pancakes), but the terrace of this dog-friendly place extends above the Danube, that makes the experience special.

Golyós Grill Terasz (BallGrill terrace)

The curiosity of „Golyós” is the two petanquecourt they have besides the usualrestaurantopportunities and the barbecue grills. The grillterrace is the haunt of the Petanque Club, so this is a must-see place for game enthusiasts. People tired in the game can choose from traditional plates as bean goulash, stew or scone with ewe cheese.

Csónakház mulató (Boathouse Club)

The Boathouse Club is one of the the most famouswedding venuesin the capital and not by chance. The wooden structured, timberedrestaurant is a listed building with a terrace located directly on the shore. It offers cozy recreational opportunities with wood furnitures and high qualityfoodsupply, such as my personal favorites: grilled salmon fillet and onion soup.

Besides these, there are also at least 20 different bars and buffets, but they have something in common: friendly atmosphere, evening concerts, and guaranteed vacation experience. And last but not least: the coast is easily accessible with the suburban railway H5, with buses 34 and 106, and it has its own boat stop (Rómaifürdő), so you can also fit the visit into a pleasant sightseeing cruise program
