Keep your eyes peeled for Budapest’s iconic ’light trams’

The festive trams will transport passengers during the holiday season.

Citizens of the Hungarian capital as well as tourists visiting Budapest during December’s festivities are always delighted when they encounter one of the few special trams of the public transport company BKK, adorned with festive lighting during the weeks leading up to Christmas.

The transport company started its tradition a 13 years ago with a single tram along line number 2, the one rolling past such iconic landmarks as the Hungarian Parliament building. The festive tram proved to be an instant hit with the people of Budapest as well as tourists, with many wonderful photos appearing on Facebook and Instagram, depicting the LED-covered vehicle whoosing by.

For the 2021 holiday season BKK pulled out all stops – only figuratively of course – and rolled out an entire fleet of trams and other vehicles, kitted out with festive decoration. This year there are 6 trams, a special trolley bus as well as Budapest’s special cogwheel train (fogaskerekű) sporting LED-lights and other decorations as well.

According to the information on the BKK website, the special light trams show up on the streets after 3pm every day, until the 6th of January 2022. The trams will travel along 12 lines across the city, so if you want to snap a few good photos for your feed, you can check on BKK’s website (scroll past the initial Hungarian text to see the spreadsheet with the dates).
