MOL-Limo, the new carsharing system of Budapest is here

Finally we’ll have a big and cheap community car system.

Carsharing is the new buzzword of the 21th century. These days many households have not only one, but two cars, which makes life complicated and expensive. We use our vehicles only occasionally, and the rest of the time, these cars only occupy the limited place. This problem brought carsharing to life, and next year Budapest joins the cities with extended car system. Although there are some minor companies who offer rentable cars, but the entry of MOL (the Hungarian oil company) to this field will change everything.

MOL will build the largest community car sharing system in Hungary: they already have 300 Volkswagen Up (100 electric and 200 gasoline cars) and they plan to buy 100 more each year until 2021. The system is the following: after downloading an application, one can do the registration in some minutes and it’s done! You can see the nearest available cars in the app, foreclose one, and then you have 20 minutes to reach that exact car. The fee is about the half of the western European ones: 66 HUF (0.21 EUR)/ minute, and it’s only 15 HUF when you’re not moving, just waiting, or if you’re parking, but don’t want to give the car back yet.

Cars are refueled by the service provider, but parking is the responsibility of the user. For cars there will be no parking spots like for the bicycles: you have to find a parking lot on your own. But it’s also a good thing: you can left the rented car wherever you want. Moreover, carsharing system is not only good for the drivers, but also for the environment. Research shows that the average utilization of cars in the big cities is extremely low; they run only 1 hour a day. The carsharing system eliminates the need for so many cars for individuals, thus reducing the number of parking cars and thus the crowding.
