Incredible: South-African girl speaking fluent Hungarian after only two months

Lindie Botes is a true inspiration for all of us: her story shows us how determination and modern technology can help us learn a language.

If you have ever heard or read some words in Hungarian, must have noticed that our language is extremely difficult. Some language learning enthusiasts - or let’s say adventurers - want to learn it anyway but after purchasing a couple of books, spending some time with listening to dialogues and music in Hungarian, the majority of them give up and try to learn some less complex language.

But fortunately, we know some success stories, as well. Hvg.hu reports that a South African girl, Lindie Botes decided in November 2017 to learn our language and she made a fantastic progress: now she can speak fluent Hungarian. You don’t believe us? Check out her video:

Incredible, isn’t it? Well, Lindie’s method makes it even more incredible: she achieved this without using the help of private teachers or Hungarian language books. But how is this fantastic result possible without these? Well, she says she used online sources and mobile applications to reach her goals.

It might sound impossible because we all might think that to learn the basics, it is recommended to buy a textbook or to have a couple of private lessons. But Lindie says that she has acquired the Hungarian alphabet thanks to online sources, as well: she found some videos on YouTube where she could also practice the pronunciation of sounds. For the improvement of her pronunciation, she used the application called Forvo which stores audio material and records for ex. from native Hungarian speakers.

Besides listening to basic phrases and correcting her pronunciation by Forvo, Lindie also listens Hungarian music. She checks out the lyrics on the site of zeneszoveg.hu. then, she interprets the music with the help of the Google Translate. In order to reduce the error rate of its service, she does not translate whole sentences, but searches for the meanings of individual words and finds out the meaning of the sentence on her own. Lindie also uses Skype, where she practices the language with her Hungarian friend who also gives her grammar instructions.

Lindie’s tip:

If you want to practice a language all day, everywhere, it is worth changing the language settings on your phone. This will help to get accustomed to the daily practice of the language chosen.
