GOMBA

Finally the last project of the renovation of Móricz Zsigmond körtér (Móricz Zsigmond Circus) has finished.  The old new round shaped building called the Gomba is alive again!

Gomba (Mushroom) has a long history. It was built in 1942 according to the plans of József Schall. It had multiple functions through the decades. It was a central station of trams and suburban railways and a service office for public transport workers. It was also a place for shops, waiting hall for passengers and there was a room for the transformator device for the trains.

From 1943 it had become one of the most frequented meeting points of the southside of Buda and it was also a significant and determining part of the public transport system.

Here is a little list of substances that can perfectly destroy a fine architectural work: war, communism and post-communism. The building of the Gomba was a victim of those. Despite the fact it was an art relic, nothing happened for years.

May the 13th 2014 was the day of revival in the long life of the Gomba. The renovation has been finished and it is open for public now. After those long years of devastation, the building and its environment finally looks elegant, clean, and modern. It has become a worthy part of Móricz Zsigmond körtér (Móricz Zsigmond Circus).

The old fount by László Szomor from 1930 is now right in the middle of the inner area of the Gomba. This could be a great meeting point with a calm atmosphere for every citizen.

Creating green areas is one of the most important elements of almost every project in the city of Budapest. Let the trees grow! Of course, they are going to build benches too so you can sit down and enjoy the sunlight before or after work.

Curious what is going to be inside? By the middle of summer there will be a great coffee shop for you so you can have a fine cup of coffee or tea between two appointments. How about that? It is important for you to know, there will be a brand new information point and a ticket-office also.
