Discover the renovated Matthias Church

Matthias Church was always one of the most popular tourist attractions in Budapest, and now, after its renovation has finished, it is even more beautiful, and worth visiting.

If you have been to Budapest during the last few years, and you visited Buda Castle and Matthias Church, we are sure that you couldn’t see the building in its real splendour because of the renovations, from the rooftop to the flooring.

The church, which was rebuilt several times in the Middle Ages, then renovated at the end of the 19th century, based on the plans of Frigyes Schulek, had a total renovation during the last few years. At first, after 2006, the exterior of the church was renewed, then, from 2011 to 2013, the works continued more intensively in the interior of the building.

The first stage of the renovation included studying the plans of Frigyes Schulek, which can be found in the Kiscelli Muzeum. After that, the restorers looked at the condition of the building. They examined the walls with high-tech devices which use electronic waves so they don’t damage the walls any further, but help to see the condition of the materials. This technology was not used in such renovations in Hungary before.

It would be impossible to list all the things that were renovated in Matthias Church, from the basement to the attic, but some details and numbers are worth sharing and maybe memorizing. Approximately 150,000 tiles were reproduced by Zsolnay in Pécs, so that the roof's distinctive pattern and colours could be revived. The elements of the flooring were supplied by Pesti Kerámia.

The restorers renewed about 250 square meters of stained-glass windows, 600 square meters of murals, and 11,000 square meters of decorative paintings. They restored the oak wood gates and the furnishing, as well.

During the renovation, the main goal was not just the reconstruction of the remaining parts of the building, but also addressing the challenge of the many visitors, varied events, weddings, and concerts to be held there in the future. Whatever the occasion is, we are sure in one thing: Matthias Church is worth visiting now, maybe more than ever.
