Testing metro 4

After decades of planning, Budapest’s latest, highly anticipated, green-coloured metro line opened Friday.

28th of March was a big day in the Hungarian capital’s life: István Tarlós, Mayor of Budapest and the Prime Minister Viktor Orbán handed over the new metro to the passengers, who could try it for the first time at noon, and then all weekend for free. Taking advantage of this, I have spent Saturday testing the new line.

It was a surprisingly pleasant experience: automatic air-conditioned trains, modern, airy, yet less drafty stations, unique interior designed platforms characterize the new subway. Thanks to the investment, eachstation’s environment has been renewed. According to the official statement the new green-signed line makes its whole journey in 13 minutes from one end station to another in the completed section of 7.4 kilometers that connects the Keleti Railway Station with Kelenföld railway station. The new line performed very wellin this: according to my measurement the total road time was 14 minutes, which is absolutelya good result with the appeared curiouscrowd, which was similar to the rush hour traffic. This timeframe also means that the metro does not spend a lot of time at one stop. When you hear the “doors are closing” sign, you better hurry, because they really are.

All stations of metro 4 are completely accessible, in addition to the escalators, elevators also help the wheelchair users and the travellers with strollers or large packages. Elevators transport the passengers to the platform level starting from the street and the underpass level. The lifts are comfortable and spacious, each station has at least two of them, and they are operating continuously at every station. In addition to the stops, the trains themselves are made using the latest technology: they will run without driver after the test run and already automatic system controls the doors opening and closing. Also an integrated camera system assists the safe passenger exchange in all trains. On the platforms the safety margin is bordered with orange and blue indicator light, different colour for each direction. The first refers to the line to Keleti railway station, the second to the Kelenföld.

Like the other subway lines, this one also runs in every 2-3 minutes during peak hours, whileduring the dayand on weekends in every 5 minutes, late at night in every 10 minutes. This new metro marked M4 provide transit options among others: to the M2 at Keleti Railway Station and to M3 at Kálvin Square. In relation to Metro 4, BKK (Centre for Budapest Transport) performed one of the largest reorganization of surface traffic in recent years. 10 capital districts, Budaörs and Törökbálint are affected. The Surface Transportation significantly changed from Saturday, when 40 bus lines, 5 tram- and 3 trolley lines changed. Let’s be veryattentive!
