A majestic ornament

After more than 30 years of devastation, in the first week of April the 131-year-old building designed by the world famous architect Miklós Ybl regained its magnificence. The finishing of the Castle Garden Bazaar (Várkert Bazár) was only the first part of the whole project.

Wherever you look in the old city of Budapest you can see something truly beautiful. Something truly beautiful with deep, hard history. Sights full of sense. Buildups with a soul. Buildings and objects that could tell you a long story. The old Castle Garden Bazaar is one of them.

The building had multiple functions during the long years. Originally it was a special kind of market full of various shops and workshops. Imagine all the people full of elegance looking at the multifarious wares!

After one year of the original opening in 1884, the world famous sculptor Alajos Stróbl opened his first very own workshop here.

The building of the Castle Garden Bazaar was the home of the Industrial Workshop for Women and the Hall of Historical Portraitures. Even a school for painters had a place here. Colourful little history, isn't it?

In the dark era of World War II the Italian style building had been seriously damaged. Some parts had been completely destroyed. After 1945 all it had got was a sloppy little renovation to prevent it to collapse. Hard decades had come then. Communism has a great talent to destroy majestic things with rich national history. From 1961 there was a pale sign of cultural life between the walls till the last rock concert. During the event, a wall near the stairs collapsed because of the poor maintenance. A few years after the accident in 1984 the place had finally closed its doors.

On the 3rd of April 2014 Castle Garden Bazaar has officially regained its old stateliness and became one of the most beautiful point of the Buda side. Have a fine drink in a nearby café, and see the sight for yourself! The buildup is partially closed because of the construction of the second part (the garden itself, the indoor public places and the parking lot), but the exhibitions in the south wing are open and waiting for you. Castle Garden Bazaar will be completely ready and open for your pleasure by autumn!
