Chain Bridge has an older twin

There are obviously some differences between the two bridges but you will notice the similarities immediately, as well.

Hungary and Budapest are quite popular across the globe. Femcafe.hu writes that they know about another Budapest in the world – it is a small settlement with seven buildings in Georgia, United States to be exact –, and now they found a twin of our beloved Chain Bridge.

The bridge can be found in a small English town Marlow, and looks very much like the Chain Bridge. This is not a coincidence, because both were designed by William T. Clark. The one found in Marlow is older, because it was inaugurated in 1832, while the Budapest Chain Bridge was inaugurated in the November of 1849.

Let’s mention some of their similarities and differences. One crosses the Thames, while the other crosses the Danube. Marlow Bridge was built to replace a onetime wooden bridge that had collapsed, while Budapest’s popular bridge was blown up by the Germans in WWII, so it had to be rebuilt. So we can say that similarities are visible at first sight.

Let’s see the main differences. The one in Marlow is not only older, but also the ‘small brother’ because it is only 72 metres long, while the Hungarian bridge is 375 metres long. And a very important difference: the English bridge’s gates are not guarded by lions, while the huge stone lions at Chain Bridge are considered as trademarks.

The bridge in our capital is more decorated and painted, and there is another important and very actual difference we have to highlight: Chain Bridge will be closed from June for one-and-a-half years because of some reconstruction and rebuilding works.

Anyway, after seeing the main similarities and differences, we think that one thing is for sure: both bridges are the prides of their cities.
