WORLD RECORD IN BUDAPEST
Posted by Eszter Hermann · Apr 28, 2014

A new tower will be built in the capital city, on the square in front of Saint Stephen’s Basilica at the end of May. The uniqueness of this future building lies not only in its record-breaking height, but also in the fact that anyone can take part in the construction. You don’t even need to be an expert, it’s enough to be a bit playful, to have a childlike attitude and to love Lego.

The world’s tallest Lego tower was built by a team of persistent students in the United States of America, in Delaware last summer. The colourful, 11-storey building was made up of over 500 000 interlocking plastic bricks, weighed nearly a ton and broke the Guinness World Record with its 34.43 meter height (112 feet). It stood almost 1.8 meters (6 feet) taller than the previous record winner, set in Prague in 2012.

Now it’s Budapest’s turn. The 46th Lego Tower Construction will be held on 21-25 May, on Saint Stephen’s Square, in front of the Basilica. The tower has to be built up in 5 days, and according to the plans will be about 36 meters (120 feet) high. The elements of the building will be constructed separately and put together at the end. Anyone – not only children but adults, too – can participate in the construction which will be assisted by two professional Lego builders from Denmark. The organizers of the event expect the monumental tower to reach its maximum height on Sunday, between 13 and 14 o’clock. Thereafter, everyone can admire the prodigious creature and even shoot some pictures – after all, it might be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In addition to being one of the lucky witnesses to breaking the world record, visitors can select from a number of free programs. Kids can try the Ninjago ninja training academy, the Lego video games, take part in a family mosaic construction or a car-building competition, but they can also play at the Lego Star Wars or Lego Friends game tables. And not only these, but famous perfomers such as Fluor Tomi, the Animal Cannibals or the Buborék Band and the beautiful spot that serves as home to the event, too will make the weekend even more unforgettable.
