New athletic center is going to be built in the outskirt of the city

It was intended to be Olympic stadium, but this is what will be realized.

As you may remember, Budapest wanted to host 2024 Olympic Games – but we withdrew the application due to the huge opposition of the local people. Well, some of the biggest changes (exactly 11 developments) will take place anyway. The new plan is to build an athletic stadium and an extreme park in the southern border of Budapest. The aim is to build a niche athletic center, which includes a central stadium, an indoor hall and open-air training facilities. The capital bought four plans for an estimated 20 million forints, and now we show you the buildings that have good chance to be built sometime in the future.

The first one is a Naour Architect Ltd.’s stadium which would be suitable for 15 thousand people, but also would be expandable up to 55 thousand people. It is planned that the main building will be embedded in the landscape, with minimal modifications to the already existing road and public transport network, and all the temporary concrete and steel structures can be broke down to reusable elements, except the roof.

The second design was dreamed by Építészkohó Ltd. and it’s unique because the extension would fit organically to the default based, and it doesn’t even feel that it is "semi-finished" in that version. On the other hand, it means that this plan is less practical than the first one, which can be a problem in the future.

The third plan has the most unique atmosphere but has many disadvantages as well. The designers would transform the whole neighborhood of the athletic center to create an actively used green area that fits into the cityscape. As a result, they would raise a larger hill on the Danube shore, to which the asymmetrical building of the stadium would fit. Although it would be an iconic building of Budapest, city administration has some concerns…

And last but not least: the fourth bought plan has interesting structural and formal elements, although implementation would be very costly.

It is planned that the Athletic Stadium will not stand alone, but its immediate neighborhood (North-Csepel) will have further sports facilities at 55 acre. There will be an Xtreme park where BMX racing track, kayak-canoe racing track, climbing facilities, skateboard track, cycling freestyle track, and a tennis center will take place.
