These are the 5 best fairs of the city.
The best things in December are undoubtedly the Christmas fairs. Gingerbread, mulled wine, orange and cinnamon scent is in the air, local artisans selling their goods, the squares dressed in ceremonial decoration are awaiting guests during these marvelous weeks. We have Christmas markets in literally every corner of the city, so be sure to visit at least one other after Vörösmarty Square. We collected the best fairs of the city to help:
Vörösmarty Square:
this is the event without which the holiday would not be complete. Each year, Vörösmarty Square is transformed into the annual Budapest Christmas Market. Visitors can browse over 100 stands offering unique Christmas-themed arts and crafts. A giant light show on the facade of the glamorous Gerbeaud building, music performances, food and wine are also part of the festival.
St Stephen’s Basilica:
Another classic fair in Budapest, which would be a sin to miss. Smaller, but at least as beautiful venue, and it’s just 10-minute walk from the previous one. The Christmas market on St Stephen’s Square is right in front of the beautiful St Stephen’s Basilica, which ensures truly majestic environment.
Advent in Óbuda:
Óbuda is the northern region of Buda, and it’s Christmas fair is one of the best in the country. The beautiful cobblestone square has an astonishing atmosphere, there’s an ice-rink in the middle, and, of course, folklore handicrafters, designers, fine artists, handicraft workshops and creators of gastro handricrafts will be awaiting you. Besides beautiful souvenirs, you can choose from a wide variety of gastro handicraft products that offer an outstanding culinary experience.
Városháza park Advent:
This is the smaller park next to Deák Ferenc tér metro station, where little wooden houses await. The programs of the fair are organized in the spirit of silent and substantial preparation. In addition to the diversity and richness of cultural programs, this year the emphasis is on the importance of community events, the feeling of belonging, joint preparation and celebration.
Gozsdu Christmas fair:
The party district become a little more intimate before the holidays, as they hold a thematic fair. Handmade gifts, jewelry, postcards and booklets are lined up on the tables, in many cases in better quality than at major fairs. And if we have enough of the celebration, we can go to an optional bar or restaurant to warm up.
