Budapest Summer Festival is the biggest cultural festival in the country. It lasts for 3 months and during this time we can see theater, opera and musical performances, dance performances, spectacular shows, children's theater, jazz, world music and even classical music. Here comes 5 must-see productions we think everyone should see once in a lifetime. This summer is a perfect opportunity.

The Gershwins®’ PORGY AND BESS concert show

23 and 25 June (Friday and Sunday)

Gershwin's thrilling jazz opera is marked by the complexion of its music and language making this unmistakably American-flavored blend a masterpiece within its genre, as it combines elements of traditional African American jazz, blues and Native American music. At the same time, the songs seem to be born the very moment they are performed.

Béjart Ballet Lausanne: BALLET FOR LIFE - Classical ballet

21 July (Friday)

In remembrance of Maurice Béjart, who would have been 90 years old this year, Béjart Ballet Lausanne cherishes its exceptional founding father by presenting a dazzling performance. Besides his remarkable influence as a ballet dancer and choreographer, Béjart has created the 'ballet of the 20th century' and along with it a dancing company that has stayed as vibrant as ever since Béjart died 10 years ago.

Soweto Gospel Choir

23 July (Sunday)

The uniquely colorful, double Grammy-winning Soweto Choir comprising more than forty singers celebrates its 15th anniversary. Merging African Gospel with spiritual, reggae and American popular music, the show of the South African choir is not only a stunningly spectacular but also unmatched in its musical richness. Achieving international success from very early on, the performances of the ensemble are a great hit throughout the world.

Giuseppe Verdi: Il trovatore

28 and 30 July (Friday and Sunday)

Verdi's most popular romantic opera on stage! Verdi's most dramatic masterpiece – best-known for its musical theme within the ‘gypsy choir’ – takes us on an exhilarating journey of passion, vengeance and murder. Director László Vámos sets the stage for a traditional performance while we step into a powerful, yet timely visual world created. The production stars young Azerbaijani soprano Dinara Alieva as Leonora and famous Italian tenor Riccardo Massi as Manrico. World-renowned mezzo-soprano Ildikó Komlósi will perform Azucena, while Mihály Kálmándy, the internationally renowned baritone, will sing Count Luna for the first time in this staging.

Cirque Éloize: Saloon. The Wild Wild West comes alive

4 and 5 August (Friday and Saturday)

America is under construction. The West is booming. The railroad is being developed. In the middle of the desert, a town comes to life. A saloon opens its doors. A place to gather and share tales, it quickly becomes a theatre for stories of all kinds. Thrust the doors of the saloon open and let the country folk music and the spectacular sights enthrall you! Bringing its brand new performance to Budapest to amaze the young and the old, the world famous Canadian circus theatre Cirque Éloize is on stage for the first time on the Margaret Island. Theatre and circus collide with stunning intensity in the legendary world of the musical comedy, presenting original choreographies, a lot of humor and spectacular actions.
