Galvani Bridge will serve as an overpass between Csepel and Újbuda, and is planned to be built from 2028 to 2033.
The idea of a bridge connecting Csepel and Újbuda – southern areas of Budapest – was already born in 1985 but we had to wait until the past few years for these plans to become reality. In 2017, an international architectural design competition was announced in Hungary to select the best plan for a new bridge constructed over the Danube.
The final goal of the project was a new bridge called Galvani Bridge that connects the less-developed southern parts of the city, helps reduce the traffic in the city centre (on the inner-city bridges, too) and also fits into the image of Budapest.
The winners of the competition are the English-Dutch UNStudio and the Buro Happold Engineering consultancy who, among others, have also designed the Erasmus Bridge of Rotterdam.
According to their plans, the newest Danube bridge in Budapest is going to be unique and elegant, dynamic and powerful. The overpass will be a 2x3-laned bridge with tramway lines and is planned to be built between 2028 and 2033.
Take a look at the visuals, this is how Galvani Bridge will look like.
Did you know?
According to previous plans, the construction of Galvani Bridge should have been finished much earlier - until 2024. Why? Because The Hungarian Olympic Committee wanted to host the Olympic Games in that year but later, we withdrew from hosting the Games so a lot of plans, including Galvani Bridge were put on hold.
Now this overpass is becoming real – a couple of years later than 2024 but still a lot of time after the first idea of a bridge connecting Csepel and Újbuda, the southern parts of Budapest.
