There is life beyond Tokaji Aszú.
Hungarians really know what good wine is: the country has many vineyards, many of which have been in operation for a long time. More than 100 vineyards in Hungary are divided between seven wine regions:
- in the northeast, Eger and its red and white wines;
- Balaton, known for its local grapes and Burgundy pinot noir;
- Danube region, which lies between the Danube and the Tisza, and is known for its wines produced on sandy soil;
- white wines from Northern Transdanubia's calcareous region;
- Pannon region with its red wines and the famous wines from Villány;
- Sopron, founded by the Celts, is one of the oldest wine regions at the foot of the Alps;
- and the best known of all, in the northeast of Hungary: Tokaj, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
All regions have very good wines, of course, and now we gathered our 5+1 favorite wineries that everyone should know:
Béres Vineyard and Winery - Tokaj
This family-run estate is relatively young, started winemaking in 2003. The winery is well-known for its Tokaj Cuvée aged in oak barrel. The result is a fresh, well-balanced fruity and sugary wine.
Bock Winery - Villány
The traditional Bock winery has been engaged in winemaking since the 18th century. The beautiful 70 acres of vineyards produce a variety of juicy wines, such as Cserszegi Fűszeres, Muscat Ottonel, Sauvignon blanc, Hárslevelűh and Chardonnay.
Fritz Wine House and Pension - Szekszárd
This 30-acre vineyard is a tribute to the local German tradition that has been present since 1635. The land has a somewhat sacred atmosphere, as there is a chapel next to it. It is known for its white wines.
Vincze Winery - Eger
Their most famous product is Cabernet Franc Arcanum 2007, which was awarded with the gold medal by Monde Selection in Brussels. It is also worth highlighting the wines of Kékfrankos and Blauburger grapes.
Laposa Winery - Badacsonytomaj
Laposa is one of the best wineries in the Balaton Highlands. Laposa's wine terrace is found at the highest point of Badacsony, and if you climb up to this point, the reward will be amazing: you won't forget their Pinot Gris.
Csányi Winery - Villány
The predecessor of this winery is the Chateau Teleki Winery, founded by Zsigmond Teleki in 1881. According to their tradition, "good wine cannot be made without dedication," which the current owners also declare.
