What to do during Advent season in Budapest
Posted by Budnews · Dec 4, 2019

Christmas is almost here and we collected how to maximize the feeling.

Winter is officially here: it's December, it's snowing, the whole city has Christmas fever. So what to do if you're in Budapest and want to prepare your soul for Christmas? Let us show.

The first and most obvious thing is to visit a Christmas fair! The best things in December are undoubtedly the Christmas fairs, where gingerbread, mulled wine, orange and cinnamon scents fill in the air, local artisans sell their goods, and the squares are dressed in festive decoration. We have Christmas markets in literally every corner of the city, but if you want the original, the biggest one, than visit the one at Vörösmarty Square or at St Stephen's Basilica.

Listen the Christmas Concert of the National Choir. They take us on a Christmas tour with the world's most beautiful European Christmas songs and songs beyond the sea, giving us a glimpse into the Christmas mystery of the people who live far away from us. From simple piano accompaniment to the most daring polyphonic choral works, love is everywhere during these days. https://www.facebook.com/events/277814299828924/

Try out the enlightened Christmas tram, especially if you have children. These enlightened trams operates on tram line 2 and became inevitable accessories of winter Budapest within the past few years. 3500 meters of lightbulbs (exactly 39 200 white and blue LED lights) on the trains provide the festive feeling outside, and even the inside of the tram has festive decorations.

Don't miss ice-skating in the City park: we know that it's possible to ice-skate after Christmas, but somehow it's the best in this festive season. Fortunately there are many ice-skate rinks in the city from December to the end of February, so if you tried the biggest one, also visit a smaller one. Every district has its own temporary ice rink and even shopping malls have one on the roof or in their garden.

Eat roasted chestnuts and drink mulled wine! Roasted chestnuts are typical winter delicacies that warms up our hands, our stomachs and our hearts at once, just as the hot, spicy, warm drink we call mulled wine. You can buy both of them in every advent fair, and in every second corner, so don’t miss it. You can’t say you’re in Christmas mood until you haven’t try this divine delicacies!
