Budapest is changing: that’s how the city will look like during the FINA World Championships

Budapest organizes the FINA World Championships between July 14-30.

If you’re in the Budapest these days, you've probably run into some construction works in the city. That’s because of the Fina World Championship we’re hosting this year. And we’re gonna have some really a special venues: swimmers not only measure their skills in swimming pools, but also at the most spectacular places in Budapest and Lake Balaton.

Batthyány Square / Buda embankment of the Danube

Temporary pools for the High Diving discipline will be set up by Batthyány Square, alongside River Danube – just across the bank to Budapest’s most breath-taking sight, the mighty Parliament building and near to the Buda Castle and Gellért hill.

City Park - Városliget Lake

Synchronised swimming will be held by Heroes Square (Hősök tere), the iconic UNESCO World Heritage site, which is located adjacent to the City Park ice rink. The world will be able to take in some astonishing sights of the Hungarian capital while following the competition of the 2017 Championships.

Lake Balaton – Balatonfüred

A place we (I mean the organizers) cannot miss. A true paradise for open water swimmers, a well-tested venue for major aquatic events. The course is located by the main promenade of Füred, which offers a brilliant view of the race and the Tihany peninsula. Balaton, Central Europe’s largest fresh-water lake will be a comfortably warm and safe environment for participants.

Danube Arena

Danube Arena is the new, big building at Árpád Bridge, Budapest’s new wonder. It will be the main venue of the 2017 FINA World Championships. It’s ongoing construction is already considered a huge achievement, as it’s to be completed in less than two years, a record-breaking time.

Alfred Hajos Complex, Margaret Island

If you tried to have a nice walk or picnic at the island you probably were a bit disappointed about the big construction works. But it’s for a good cause: this outstanding pool complex named after its architect, Alfréd Hajós, the first Olympic champion of Hungary (winner of the 100 and 1200m freestyle events at the 1896 Athens Games), will be one venue of the Championships.
