Hidden treasures of Budapest: parks nobody knows

They are beautiful and almost empty!

When it’s about parks in Budapest, everybody thinks about City Park or Margaret Island, but in reality, there are many small but beautiful ones in the city. These ones are definitely worth visiting:

Buda Arboretum is at the southern slope of Gellért Hill and belongs to the Horticultural University. It’s open and free all year, and it’s one of the most beautiful opportunities in this field. It has gorgeous slopes and ponds and of course many beautiful and rare plants and huge biodiversity.

Varga Márton Horticulture and Geodetic Institute and School: This beautiful garden is very little known, sometimes it’s hard to find for even those who lives in the area. The main element of this garden is a two hundred square meters big lake system, which has several bridging stones in it. The paths in the garden are designed in a very clever way. Every turn gives a new sight and the "rhythm" of the stone path makes it more enjoyable to walk around.

Károlyi Garden: It’s the oldest park in the city center, yet barely known. The beautiful garden of the baroque palace was declared a public garden in 1932, and since then it is considered one of the city's most mythical parks. It even has a modern playground, but unfortunately, dogs aren’t welcome in this hidden paradise. Fun fact: the bunny sculpture is not Alice’s one from the hole, but Karcsi, the late bunny of the garden who was the only animal to enter the area of the strictly guarded and well maintained park.

Epreskert („strawberry garden”) is a wonderfully beautiful, secluded ancient park near Heroes Square. Until the end of the 18th century, there was a strawberry field here, but Alajos Stróbl, the "sculptor pope", fell in love with it and restored it. It belongs to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts since 1921. It’s the heaven on earth for the sculpture fans: many studios are hidden in this beautiful place.

Graphisoft park is a huge office complex with a beautiful garden. It’s 18,000 square meter park was completely refurbished in the summer of 2010. Now it is one of the most beautiful parks on the Buda side with a fountain, a playground, decorative stones and plenty of sitting facilities. Not surprisingly, a favorite place for local people.

The garden of Barabás Villa: Barabás Villa is one favorite wedding venue in the city, not by chance: not only the building, but its three-storey, well-kept garden is beautiful. It’s really hard to find, because only the villa can be seen from the streets, but absolutely worth the effort. It’s the island of peace and tranquility.
