Record year in Hungarian tourism
Posted by Mia Balogh · Aug 22, 2018

There are a couple of favourable sings indicating a nice growth – again – in Hungarian tourism.

We don’t know exact data after the peak season yet but one thing seems to be sure: this year can bring a new record in Hungarian tourism. The number of tourists in Hungary grew by more than 5 percent in the first half of the year – compared with the same period of 2017 –, while accommodation revenues increased by more than 10 percent, the Cabinet Office said.

Of course, there are still a lot of travellers coming from abroad to Budapest and to Hungary, but domestic tourism is the most important reason for the growth.

As we see, some Hungarian families still travel abroad for two-week-long vacations, but some families decide to have two shorter trips – maybe both in Hungary. And those with humbler possibilities also choose to stay in the country and spend their holidays for example in a nearby town, lake or riverside.

Signs of a record year

A couple of favourable signs are indicating a record year in Hungarian tourism. Among these, we should mention for example the record visitor numbers of all the big festivals (Sziget, Balaton Sound, Volt, Efott, Campus) and the increased number of carracing fans who visited Formula-1 Hungarian Grand Prix in July.

And just one more interesting detail: this year, until the end of July, Liszt Ferenc Airport was used by almost 8.4 million passengers. That means 14.7% increase compared with the same period of 2017 – thanks to a couple of new flights mainly.
