Best tea houses in Budapest
Posted by Mia Balogh · Jan 8, 2016

Snowy winter days are over in Budapest, so in the chilly white you might feel a little bit more urged to buy a hot drink. Let us show you a short list of our favourite teahouses, where you will really enjoy sipping one or two cups of tea.

Big Ben Teahouse

If you are looking for a place with a charming interior design, great atmosphere and wide selection of tea, then visit Big Ben Teahouse near Ferenciek Square. This teahouse offers you more than 130 types of tea and 20 types of coffee. Order a nice tea cocktail or some of their iced teas, authentic black and green teas, but the menu includes tea mixes like Darjeeling Himalaya as well, with ingredients that have been harvested over 2000 meters only. In this tea house, they accept bank cards Master and Visa, and if you are a student, you can get 10 percent discount.

Address: 1053 Budapest, Veres Pálné Street 10.

Green Turtle’s Cave

If you would like to explore a teahouse with native American spirit, we suggest you to visit Green Turtle’s Cave just five minute walk from Oktogon. We tasted a tea called Indian Cherry, which is made from fruits of the Rocky Mountains, for example elderberry, Indian blueberry, sloe and wild cherry, and “The fruit garden of the old Indian”, which is a tea with strawberry, elderberry, hibiscus, rhubarb, mulberry and other red fruits. Both of the teas were served in small jugs, with some honey and lemon. Both were hot and really good!

Address: 1066 Budapest, Jókai Street 14.

Marumoto

Maybe Marumoto is the most authentic Japanese teahouse and shop in Budapest, you can see it looking at the simple and elegant interior design and at the drink cards, as well. You can order here traditional and re-interpreted tea specialities, green tea-based “tea snacks” and in its small shop you can buy tea blends, porcelain tea sets, traditional lunch boxes and other souvenirs, as well.

Address: 1051 Budapest, Hercegprímás Street 9. (near St. Stephen’s Basilica)

Our tip: discover Cat cafés of Budapest

Cats and cafés are popular in Budapest, so are cat cafés. The city has one under 3 Révay Street, near St. Stephen’s Basilica, where you can enjoy your drinks and special cakes as much as the company of a dozen cats. The other Catcafe can be found in the 7th district, in 38 Damjanich Street. They have fix prices: for 1750 HUF you can drink tea, coffee, sodas without limitations, and you can also enjoy a piece of cake or a glass of wine. There is no timeout – you can stay as long as you like it there, having fun with the three beautiful cats of the café.
